Game of Thrones S06E01 Review

game-of-thrones-season-6-poster-2-630x933Sometimes when shows hype up their premiere too much, they have trouble delivering. This premiere was not one of those times. I think this was a solid first episode considering how much anticipation there was. It did a great job of tying up most of the loose ends from last season’s story arcs as well as set up the new developments. Even though it spent a lot of time addressing questions left unanswered from last season, I think there was a lot of forward momentum that is the most important thing.

They answered most of the questions about who was dead and who wasn’t and they showed where everyone ended up. I appreciated that. If they dragged the stories out any further, I’m sure we would all be pulling our hairs out. Then, they ended with the strangest and most discomforting reveal: Melisandre is pretty damn old. This was something that came up way earlier in the books and they completely skipped over this element when it was supposed to happen. I almost forgot about it until this ending scene. Honestly, I think they plugged it in brilliantly. This low-key reveal helped set an ominous, yet very distinct new tone for this season.

Here are my top 5 craziest moment list:

  1. The Martells are dead. The Dorne plot is dead. This was by far the most shocking.
  2. Melisandre’s magical necklace reveal
  3. Brienne finally reaches her goal!!!!
  4. Ramsey (kind of) has feelings…?
  5. Daenerys didn’t get touched.
  6. Bonus: Jorah finding that teeny-tiny ring. Like really?
